Facebook and Instagram Recover After Outage Hits Thousands of Users

Thousands of Facebook and Instagram users reported problems accessing the Meta-owned platforms on September 20 and 21, 2026, as a widespread service disruption affected users in the United States and other regions.
At the height of the disruption, outage tracker Downdetector recorded more than **17,000 reports for Facebook** and more than **5,000 for Instagram** in the United States.
The disruption was relatively brief, with reports falling sharply later in the evening and services largely recovering. Meta has not publicly confirmed what caused the outage.
## **What happened to Facebook and Instagram?**
Reports of problems began climbing rapidly on Sunday evening in the United States.
According to Downdetector data cited by Reuters, Facebook had received more than **17,000 outage reports by 9:11pm Eastern Time**, while Instagram had accumulated more than **5,000 reports**.
Users reported difficulties accessing the platforms, loading pages and viewing content.
Facebook Messenger also experienced an increase in outage reports, while WhatsApp saw a much smaller rise in complaints during the same period.
## **Were users outside the US affected?**
Although the largest reported spike was in the United States, disruption reports also appeared in other countries.
Outage monitoring data showed reports from users in countries including Canada, Australia, Pakistan, the Philippines and New Zealand. Reports were also recorded in parts of Asia.
In Singapore, for example, Downdetector reports for Facebook briefly climbed to 229, while Instagram reached 109 reports.
This indicates the disruption was not necessarily limited to the US, although the scale of the impact varied considerably by location.
## **Were Facebook and Instagram completely down?**
Not necessarily.
Outages affecting large online platforms can impact different users in different ways. Some people may be unable to log in, while others may experience problems loading feeds, accessing the website or using specific features.
Separate reports from Asia indicated that web versions of Facebook, Instagram and Threads were particularly affected in some locations, while mobile applications continued working for many users.
This explains why one user might have been unable to access Instagram while another could continue using the app normally.

The major disruption appears to have been resolved.
Reuters reported that outage reports had fallen significantly by around **10pm Eastern Time**, indicating that Facebook and Instagram services had largely recovered.
Another outage-monitoring service subsequently reported that it was no longer detecting active problems with Facebook.
Users experiencing problems now may want to check whether the issue is limited to their device, internet connection or account.
## **What caused the Meta outage?**
The cause remains unclear.
Meta had not issued an official explanation for the disruption at the time of the latest reports, and Reuters said the company had not provided a cause.
That means claims attributing the incident to a cyberattack, server failure or specific technical error should not be treated as confirmed unless Meta provides further information.

Downdetector is an online service that monitors disruptions across websites, apps and online services by analysing reports submitted by users and other sources.
An important point is that **17,000 Downdetector reports does not mean only 17,000 people were affected**.
The figure represents reports submitted to the service, not the total number of affected Facebook users. The actual number could therefore be different.

Before changing passwords or reinstalling apps, users should first check whether a wider outage is taking place.
Try switching between the mobile app and web version, check the internet connection and restart the application.
If thousands of other people are reporting the same problem, waiting for Meta to restore the service is generally more useful than repeatedly changing account settings.
Users should also be cautious of unofficial posts claiming to offer special links or tools to “restore” Facebook or Instagram access during an outage.
