Forgot to Renew Your ILOE Insurance? Here’s How to Check, Renew and Avoid a UAE Fine

By Michelle
UAE employees are being reminded to check whether their **Involuntary Loss of Employment insurance**, commonly known as ILOE, is still active.
The insurance is mandatory for most Emiratis and residents employed in the UAE’s private sector and federal government. Depending on the policy selected, employees may need to renew annually or every two years.
Allowing the insurance to expire or missing scheduled premium payments can result in cancellation of the policy, financial penalties and a break in the continuous subscription period required to claim compensation.
The renewal process can be completed directly through the official [ILOE portal](https://www.iloe.ae/) or ILOE mobile application without using a third-party agent.
## What is ILOE insurance?
ILOE is the UAE’s unemployment insurance scheme.
It provides eligible employees with temporary financial support when they lose their job because their employer terminated their employment for a reason other than resignation or disciplinary dismissal.
Compensation is calculated at up to 60% of the employee’s average basic salary during the six months before the job loss.
Eligible claimants can receive compensation for up to three consecutive months per claim, subject to the policy limits and claim conditions.
## Is ILOE insurance mandatory?
Yes. ILOE subscription is mandatory for eligible UAE citizens and residents working in the private sector or federal government.
The main exempt categories are:
Investors who own and manage the business where they work.
Domestic workers.
Workers employed under temporary contracts.
People under the age of 18.
Retirees receiving a pension who have joined a new employer.
Employees who do not fall under an exemption should not assume that their employer has completed the subscription for them. Enrolling, paying and maintaining the policy are generally the employee’s responsibility.
## How often must ILOE insurance be renewed?
ILOE policies are available for either one year or two years.
The expiry date depends on the policy period selected when the employee subscribed. Employees paying monthly, quarterly or every six months must also keep up with the chosen instalment schedule.
The safest approach is to log in before the policy expires and check both **Policy Details** and **View Statement**.
Do not rely only on SMS or email reminders, as contact details may be outdated or messages may be missed.
## How much does ILOE insurance cost?
Employees with a basic monthly salary of **AED 16,000 or less** fall under Category A. The premium is **AED 5 plus VAT per month**, with maximum compensation of up to **AED 10,000 per month** for as many as three months per eligible claim.
Employees with a basic salary above **AED 16,000** fall under Category B. The premium is **AED 10 plus VAT per month**, with maximum compensation of up to **AED 20,000 per month** for as many as three months per eligible claim.
The policy can be purchased for one or two years, and the full applicable VAT is added to the first payment.
## What happens if you forget to renew?
If premiums remain unpaid for more than three months after their due date, the official ILOE terms state that the insurance certificate may be cancelled.
Once cancelled, the employee must take out a new policy to become insured again.
This can also interrupt the continuous 12-month subscription period required before an employee becomes eligible to claim compensation.
In practical terms, forgetting to renew may cause three separate problems: a fine, cancellation of coverage and loss of continuous-subscription history.
## How much is the ILOE fine?
A worker who fails to subscribe to the compulsory unemployment insurance scheme can face a **AED 400 fine**.
The UAE Government portal currently also lists a **AED 400 fine for failure to pay the required premiums**. The official ILOE website confirms that failure to pay for more than three months leads to policy cancellation and a fine under the applicable law.
Some earlier MoHRE announcements referred to a AED 200 penalty for missed scheduled instalments. Because official publications have used different figures over time, employees should check their live fine status through MoHRE before making payment rather than relying on an old article or screenshot.
## How to renew ILOE insurance online
Visit the official [ILOE website](https://www.iloe.ae/) and select **Subscribe/Renew Here**.
Choose the correct employment sector.
Enter your Emirates ID or Unified Number, along with your UAE mobile number.
Request the one-time password sent to your registered mobile number.
Review your personal and employment information.
Check the current policy status, expiry date and outstanding amounts.
Select the required policy duration and payment schedule.
Confirm the declaration and proceed to payment.
Pay using an accepted bank card.
After successful payment, download the insurance certificate and receipt for your records.
The same process can also be completed using the official ILOE mobile application.
## What documents or information do you need?
The basic renewal process normally requires:
A valid Emirates ID or Unified Number.
A UAE mobile number.
Access to the one-time password sent to the registered number.
A valid payment card.
An email address is useful for receiving the insurance certificate, although the official user guide states that adding one may be optional.
## How to check when your policy expires
Log in to the ILOE portal or mobile app.
Choose your employment sector and enter your Emirates ID and mobile number.
Request the OTP.
Select **View Policy Details** to see the policy period and expiry date.
Select **View Statement** to check completed payments, unpaid premiums and the next amount due.
Download a copy of the insurance certificate after renewal so you have a clear record of the new expiry date.
## How to check whether you have an ILOE fine
Employees can check penalties through the [MoHRE website](https://www.mohre.gov.ae/), MoHRE mobile app or the official **ILOE Quick Pay** service.
The system may allow a search using the Emirates ID, Unified Number or labour card details.
Check the displayed fine information carefully before paying. If the policy has already been cancelled, paying the fine alone may not restore coverage—you may also need to subscribe again through a new insurance policy.
## What if your policy has already been cancelled?
The official ILOE FAQ confirms that employees can subscribe again after cancellation.
Log in through the official portal, review any unpaid amount or penalty, settle the applicable obligations and purchase a new policy.
Remember that a new policy may restart the continuous subscription period used to establish claim eligibility.
This is why renewing before expiry is more important than simply paying after the policy has already lapsed.
## Why continuous coverage matters
Employees generally need at least **12 consecutive months of subscription** before becoming eligible for ILOE compensation.
The employee must also have paid all premiums according to the chosen schedule.
If coverage is interrupted for too long, the employee may no longer satisfy the continuous-subscription requirement, even if a new policy is later purchased.
Keeping the policy active protects both compliance and possible future eligibility.
## When can an employee claim compensation?
An employee may be eligible when the job loss results from termination rather than resignation or disciplinary dismissal.
The employee must have maintained at least 12 consecutive months of subscription, paid the premiums and remained legally present in the UAE.
The claim must normally be filed within **30 days of termination**.
Compensation stops if the claimant obtains another job during the benefit period.
Claims can be submitted through the ILOE portal, the mobile application or the official call centre.
## Does ILOE cover resignation?
No. ILOE is intended for involuntary job loss.
An employee who resigns voluntarily is generally not eligible for compensation.
Employees dismissed for disciplinary reasons may also be excluded, as can fraudulent claims, fictitious employment arrangements and certain other cases listed in the policy terms.
## Can your employer renew it for you?
Some employers may help employees subscribe or send reminders, but the legal responsibility generally remains with the employee.
Workers should personally verify the policy status even when an employer, HR department or payroll team originally helped with enrolment.
A change of employer does not mean you should ignore the existing policy. Log in and confirm that your employment information, salary category and payment status remain accurate.
## Other ways to renew or pay
The ILOE website and app are the direct channels and are listed as free from additional subscription service charges.
Other supported channels may include Al Ansari Exchange, Tawjeeh and Tasheel centres, selected bank applications, ATMs, kiosks and telecommunications payment methods.
Third-party channels may apply additional service fees, so online renewal through the official portal is usually the simplest option.
## What to do today
Open the official ILOE portal and check your expiry date.
Review the payment statement for overdue instalments.
Renew before the certificate expires.
Download the updated certificate and receipt.
Save the expiry date in your phone calendar and schedule reminders one month and one week before renewal.
If a fine appears or your employment details are missing, contact MoHRE or the ILOE support team instead of using an unofficial service provider.
## Why this matters
ILOE insurance costs only a small amount each month, but forgetting to maintain it can create a much larger problem.
An expired or cancelled policy may lead to a fine, break the 12-month eligibility period and leave an employee without unemployment protection when it is needed most.
The simplest way to remain compliant is to check the policy regularly, renew directly through the official platform and keep a copy of the certificate.
Do not wait until you lose your job or receive a penalty notice. Check your ILOE policy before it expires and keep your coverage active.
