iPhone 18 and the Fold Are Here — UAE Prices Are Higher Than Ever, but Tourists Can Save on VAT

By Steve
Apple’s new iPhone generation has officially landed, and this year the biggest talking point may not be just the specifications.
It is the price.
The new **[iPhone 18 Pro](https://www.whatmatters.ae/post/iphone-18-pro-max-vs-iphone-17-pro-max-is-the-upgrade-worth-the-price) starts from AED 5,099 in the UAE**, while the larger **iPhone 18 Pro Max starts from AED 5,499**. But Apple’s biggest release is its first foldable iPhone, the **iPhone Duo**, which starts from a significantly higher **AED 8,499**. ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/ae/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-duo?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
At the very top of the range, the 2TB iPhone Duo reaches **AED 13,599**, pushing Apple’s latest smartphone lineup into completely new pricing territory in the UAE. ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/ae/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-duo?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
There is, however, one potential way eligible UAE visitors can reduce the effective cost: the UAE’s **Tourist VAT Refund Scheme**.
And for residents with friends or family visiting the country, it is worth understanding exactly how that system works — and where the rules draw the line.
**iPhone 18 Pro UAE Prices**
Apple is offering the iPhone 18 Pro in four storage configurations.
**256GB — AED 5,099**
**512GB — AED 5,949**
**1TB — AED 7,649**
**2TB — AED 10,199**
The iPhone 18 Pro comes with Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, a 48MP Pro Fusion camera system and a new variable-aperture main camera.
Apple says the latest Pro range also delivers its longest iPhone battery life yet, with the Pro Max offering up to 45 hours of video playback. ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/ae/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-18-pro?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
Pre-orders in the UAE begin at **4pm on September 12, 2026**, with availability starting on **September 18, 2026**. ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/ae/iphone-18-pro/?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
**iPhone 18 Pro Max UAE Prices**
The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts AED 400 above the equivalent entry-level Pro.
**256GB — AED 5,499**
**512GB — AED 6,349**
**1TB — AED 8,049**
**2TB — AED 10,599**
For anyone currently using last year’s flagship, this is also where our related **iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Is the Upgrade Worth the Price?** comparison becomes useful before making the jump.
**Apple’s Foldable iPhone Is Finally Here**
After years of foldable-phone speculation, Apple has entered the category with the **iPhone Duo**.
The new device features a **7.6-inch folding Super Retina XDR display** on the inside and a **5.4-inch outer display**. Apple describes it as the largest display ever offered on an iPhone. ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/ae/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-duo?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
It also uses the A20 Pro chip and features a titanium frame and hinge cover.
But the new form factor comes at a substantial premium.
**iPhone Duo UAE Prices**
**256GB — AED 8,499**
**512GB — AED 9,349**
**1TB — AED 11,049**
**2TB — AED 13,599**
The iPhone Duo will be available in **Star White** and **Night Sky**. ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/ae/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-duo?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
Pre-orders start in the UAE at **4pm on October 16, 2026**, with general availability beginning on **October 23, 2026**. ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/ae/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-duo?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
**The Most Expensive iPhone Yet?**
The 2TB iPhone Duo’s AED 13,599 price makes it one of the most expensive mainstream iPhones Apple has sold in the UAE.
Even the entry-level Duo costs AED 3,000 more than the starting iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That means this year’s buying decision is not simply about choosing a screen size or storage capacity.
Buyers now have to decide whether Apple’s foldable form factor is worth entering an entirely different price bracket.
**But Can You Save 5% Through the UAE Tourist VAT Refund?**
Potentially — but the phrase “save 5%” needs some explanation.
The UAE applies **5% VAT**, and eligible tourists can request a refund on qualifying purchases through the official Tourist VAT Refund Scheme operated by the Federal Tax Authority in cooperation with Planet. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.VAT.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
However, customers do **not receive the full headline 5% of the shelf price back**.
VAT is already included within UAE retail prices, and the FTA currently states that the refund is subject to a deduction of **13% of the VAT amount requested plus AED 3.60 for each tax-free transaction**. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.VAT.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
So the actual amount returned will be slightly lower.
**How Much Could a Tourist Save on a New iPhone?**
Using the current FTA refund fee structure as an illustration:
For an **iPhone 18 Pro priced at AED 5,099**, the VAT contained within the price is approximately AED 242.81.
After the current 13% deduction from the VAT amount and the AED 3.60 transaction fee, the estimated refund would be around **AED 208**.
That would bring the approximate effective cost to around **AED 4,891**.
For an **iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at AED 5,499**, the estimated refund would be around **AED 224**, reducing the effective cost to roughly **AED 5,275**.
For the **AED 8,499 iPhone Duo**, the estimated refund could be around **AED 349**, resulting in an effective cost of approximately **AED 8,150**.
And on the **AED 13,599 2TB iPhone Duo**, the potential refund could be approximately **AED 560**, subject to eligibility, validation and the transaction meeting all Tourist VAT Refund Scheme requirements.
These figures are estimates based on Apple’s listed UAE prices and the FTA’s current published refund deductions. Actual refunded amounts should always be confirmed through the retailer and Planet system.
**Can UAE Residents Use a Visiting Friend or Family Member to Get the VAT Refund?**
This is where buyers need to be careful.
The UAE Tourist VAT Refund Scheme is designed for **eligible tourists**, not UAE residents.
According to the Federal Tax Authority, the person claiming the refund must have entered the UAE as a tourist, be **18 years or older and not be a UAE resident**. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.vat.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
The tourist must also purchase from a retailer registered with the Tourist VAT Refund Scheme.
Importantly, the FTA says **no person other than the registered passport or GCC identity-card holder can initiate or complete the validation process on their behalf**. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.VAT.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
So a UAE resident cannot simply buy an iPhone in their own name and later ask a visiting friend or relative to claim the VAT.
If a visiting friend or family member is genuinely the eligible tourist purchaser and the transaction is correctly registered to them under the tax-free shopping system, they may be able to claim the refund when they leave the UAE — provided all other scheme conditions are met.
**What Does the Tourist Need to Do?**
The purchase must be made from a retailer participating in the Tourist VAT Refund Scheme.
At the time of purchase, the tourist should ask for the transaction to be processed as a **tax-free purchase** using their valid travel document.
The FTA currently requires a minimum eligible spend of **AED 250 excluding VAT per tax-refund transaction**. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.vat.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
That threshold would easily be exceeded by any new iPhone purchase.
The tourist must then validate the tax-free transaction within **90 days of the invoice date** when departing the UAE. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.VAT.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
They may also be required to physically present the purchased product for inspection before leaving the country.
**Keep the iPhone Available for Inspection**
This is especially important when buying a high-value device such as an iPhone.
The FTA states that purchased goods should be available for inspection by Planet staff when requested. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.VAT.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
Travellers should therefore avoid placing the device somewhere inaccessible before completing the refund validation process.
At airports, the required checks should generally be completed before checked baggage becomes inaccessible if the item is inside it.
**What Documents Are Required?**
Eligible tourists should have their **original valid passport or qualifying GCC national ID**, depending on the document used to enter the UAE.
They should also have the purchased goods and evidence of their departure, such as a valid ticket or confirmed booking.
Copies of the passport are not accepted for the validation process. ([Federal Tax Authority](https://tax.gov.ae/en/services/tourist.VAT.refunds.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
**Is Buying an iPhone Through a Tourist Actually Worth It?**
On an inexpensive purchase, the difference may not feel significant.
On a device costing AED 8,499 or even AED 13,599, however, a refund of several hundred dirhams can become meaningful.
But this should not be treated as a loophole for UAE residents.
The Tourist VAT Refund Scheme has clear eligibility and validation rules, and the purchase has to genuinely qualify under those conditions.
For residents whose friends or relatives are already visiting the UAE and genuinely intend to purchase an eligible iPhone themselves, the VAT refund can make UAE pricing slightly more attractive.
**UAE iPhone Prices Are Entering a New Territory**
Apple’s 2026 lineup shows just how far premium smartphone pricing has moved.
AED 5,099 now gets buyers into the Pro range.
AED 8,499 gets them into Apple’s first foldable.
And reaching for the highest-spec iPhone Duo means spending **AED 13,599** before accessories or AppleCare.
For UAE residents, trade-in offers, retailer promotions and payment plans may therefore become increasingly important.
For eligible tourists, meanwhile, the official UAE Tourist VAT Refund Scheme provides another legitimate way to recover part of the purchase cost.
Just remember: it is **not a flat 5% discount**, and it is only available when the tourist, purchase and departure meet the official scheme requirements.
