With TikTok, Instagram and newer social platforms constantly competing for attention, Snapchat might seem like an app that should have faded into the background. In the UAE, that has not happened.

Snapchat remains deeply embedded in the way many young people communicate, share everyday moments and keep up with friends. Data published through Snap’s advertising tools indicates that the platform had a potential advertising audience of around **5.13 million people in the UAE in late 2025**, up roughly 5% year-on-year. That represented about **52.3% of the country’s population old enough to use Snapchat**, although advertising reach should not be treated as the same thing as monthly active users.

So why does Snapchat continue to hold on to UAE youth when there are so many alternatives?

## **Snapchat feels more private than traditional social media**

One of Snapchat’s biggest differences is that it was built around direct communication rather than maintaining a perfectly curated public profile.

Snaps and private chats make it easy to send ordinary moments directly to friends without feeling that everything needs to be worthy of a permanent Instagram post.

Snap has consistently positioned the platform around communication with close friends and family, temporary content and more personal interactions. In the GCC, company representatives have previously described this private, everyday sharing behaviour as one reason Snapchat fits naturally into local digital culture.

For younger users, that distinction matters.

Instagram might be where someone posts the best photo from a weekend. Snapchat can be where their friends see everything that happened in between.

## **Streaks turn chatting into a daily habit**

Snapstreaks remain one of Snapchat’s simplest but most powerful engagement features.

When two people exchange Snaps consistently, the app tracks how many consecutive days they have communicated. Maintaining a long streak can become a small daily ritual between friends.

For school and university-age users in particular, a streak can function almost like a digital friendship routine.

You do not necessarily need a long conversation. A quick photo from the car, university, café or gym can be enough to keep the interaction going.

That helps explain why Snapchat can remain part of someone’s daily routine even when they also spend considerable time on TikTok or Instagram.

## **It is about conversations, not just content**

TikTok is heavily driven by discovering videos. Instagram combines public content, Reels, Stories and messaging.

Snapchat remains particularly centred around communicating directly with people you already know.

Recent Snap-commissioned research involving **18-to-34-year-old football fans in the UAE and Saudi Arabia** found that messaging, group chats and real-time mobile conversations have become important parts of how young fans experience major matches.

That behaviour extends beyond football. Friends can react to an event, restaurant, concert or everyday moment immediately without turning it into a public post.

## **UAE youth use different platforms for different reasons**

Snapchat does not necessarily need to replace Instagram or TikTok to remain relevant.

A young UAE resident might use TikTok for entertainment and discovering trends, Instagram for Reels and public-facing content, WhatsApp for practical communication, and Snapchat for casual visual conversations with close friends.

That distinction helps explain how several platforms can remain popular simultaneously.

DataReportal’s Digital 2026 UAE report indicates that Snapchat’s potential ad reach grew by approximately **245,000 users between late 2024 and late 2025**, despite intense competition from other social platforms.

## **The camera is the starting point**

Opening Snapchat still feels different from opening many other social apps because the camera sits at the centre of the experience.

That encourages users to capture what is happening immediately rather than first deciding what content they want to consume.

Food arriving at the table, a new outfit, Dubai traffic, a university lecture, a sunset, gym progress or a funny moment between friends can become a Snap within seconds.

That low-effort style of communication suits the fast, mobile-first lifestyle of younger users.

## **AR filters remain a major attraction**

Augmented reality has become another important part of Snapchat’s identity.

Lenses allow users to change appearances, interact with environments, try products virtually or create entertaining videos without leaving the camera.

The technology is also increasingly tied to regional moments. Snap’s 2025 AR Ramadan Mall reached more than **16.8 million Snapchatters across MENA** and generated around **250 million impressions**, according to results released by Snap.

For Ramadan 2026, Snap said 93% of surveyed Snapchatters in its regional research wanted tools that helped them be creative during the season, while 92% agreed AR made Ramadan celebrations more shareable. These are Snap-reported survey findings and should be understood in that context.

## **Snap Map adds another social layer**

Snap Map gives users a visual way to see where friends are, when those friends choose to share their location.

For close social groups, this can make Snapchat useful beyond messaging. Friends can see who is nearby or what is happening around a particular place.

Location sharing is optional, and users can restrict who sees their location or use Ghost Mode. Younger users in particular should review these privacy settings carefully rather than sharing live locations broadly.

## **Snapchat fits the GCC’s visual communication culture**

Snapchat has historically performed particularly strongly across Gulf markets.

Industry interviews with Snap executives have linked this to the way people in the region use the platform to communicate with friends and family and share everyday experiences rather than only polished public content.

The platform also adapts heavily around regional occasions such as Ramadan, Eid, major sporting events and local cultural moments.

That localisation helps Snapchat feel less like a generic global platform and more connected to what is happening around users in the UAE and wider GCC.

## **Creators still matter on Snapchat**

Snapchat is not limited to private messages.

Stories and creator content give users another reason to remain inside the app. Regional creators cover food, fashion, beauty, travel, humour and everyday lifestyle content.

Snap’s 2025 regional creator highlights included formats such as celebrity cooking conversations, travel storytelling and trend-driven beauty and GRWM content.

This creates a combination that is difficult to replicate exactly: users can move from messaging a close friend to watching a creator without switching platforms.

## **Snapchat+ has added another reason to stay**

Snapchat has also expanded beyond the free app through Snapchat+ and other subscription products.

Globally, Snap announced in February 2026 that its subscription community had passed **25 million members** across Snapchat+, Lens+, Snapchat Premium and Memories Storage Plans.

Snapchat+ gives highly engaged users access to additional customisation and experimental features, adding another layer for people already invested in the platform and their Snapchat identity.

## **Is Snapchat more popular than Instagram or TikTok in the UAE?**

It is better not to frame the UAE social-media market as having one universal winner.

Different platforms publish different metrics, and advertising audience figures are not directly equivalent to active-user counts.

DataReportal reported potential UAE advertising audiences in late 2025 of around **5.13 million for Snapchat and 8.05 million for Instagram**, while TikTok’s advertising tools reported **12.5 million users aged 18 and above**. TikTok’s figure notably exceeds the UAE’s adult population, illustrating why platform advertising estimates should not be interpreted as directly comparable measures of unique active users.

What the figures do show is that Snapchat continues to have substantial reach in the UAE rather than disappearing as newer platforms grow.

## **Why Snapchat remains relevant to UAE youth**

Snapchat’s staying power comes from being useful for something slightly different.

It is less about creating the perfect feed and more about sending a moment to someone you know.

Streaks encourage daily interaction. Snaps make conversations visual. AR keeps the camera playful. Stories and creators provide entertainment. Snap Map adds location-based interaction, while the platform’s strong regional presence keeps it connected to GCC culture.

For UAE youth who have grown up using multiple social platforms at once, Snapchat does not have to replace Instagram or TikTok.

It simply has to remain the place they still open when they want to send something directly to their friends.

## **Why This Matters**

Snapchat’s continued relevance in the UAE shows that younger audiences are not necessarily abandoning older social platforms whenever something new arrives.

Instead, they assign different roles to different apps.

For creators and brands trying to reach young audiences in the UAE, that means Snapchat should not automatically be dismissed as yesterday’s platform. Its strength remains in **private communication, everyday sharing, AR and culturally relevant moments** rather than simply competing for the same public-feed behaviour as every other social network.
