More than **1.277 million students** are returning to classrooms across the UAE today, **August 31, 2026**, as schools reopen following the summer break and the country begins the 2026–27 academic year.

According to current figures, more than **1.277 million pupils** are returning to more than **1,180 schools** nationwide.
The return has brought familiar scenes across the country, with school buses back on the roads and campuses welcoming pupils with decorations, activities and first-day programmes.
## **Four-Day Phased Return for Public Schools**
One of the important changes this year is a **four-day phased return** for students under the Ministry of Education plan.
The phased return runs from **Monday, August 31 to Thursday, September 3**, with individual schools determining which year groups attend on each day.
Full student attendance is scheduled to resume on **Friday, September 4**. The approach is intended to help pupils gradually settle back into their routines at the start of the school year.
Families should follow instructions issued directly by their school, as arrangements can differ between campuses and curricula.
## **New Academic Calendar Begins**
The UAE Ministry of Education has officially set **August 31, 2026** as the beginning of the 2026–27 academic year.
The first-semester mid-term break will run from **October 12 to October 18, 2026**, with classes resuming on October 19.
Winter break begins on **December 14, 2026** and continues until January 3, 2027. Students return on January 4.
Spring break is scheduled from **April 5 to April 11, 2027**, before schools reopen on April 12.
The 2026–27 academic year is scheduled to finish on **July 2, 2027**.
## **New Changes Inside Public Schools**
The new school year is also arriving with changes to the learning experience.
Public schools are introducing reforms including adjustments to **homework and assessment practices**, as well as updated examination formats.
The changes form part of wider efforts to modernise education and place greater emphasis on skills that students will need in a rapidly changing economy.
Schools are also increasingly focusing on responsible use of technology and artificial intelligence alongside traditional academic development.
## **UAE President Sends Message to Students**
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed students, teachers, administrators and parents at the beginning of the academic year.
His message encouraged students to approach the year with ambition and determination, make the most of opportunities to gain knowledge and develop the life skills they will need for the future.
He also highlighted cooperation between families and schools and the importance of maintaining national identity and values alongside academic development.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, also welcomed the more than 1.277 million students beginning a new educational journey, highlighting the roles of students, teachers and parents in building the country’s future.
## **Expect More Traffic Around Schools**
The return of more than one million students also means the return of the UAE’s busy **school-run traffic**.
Road congestion is expected to increase around school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up periods, particularly as families return from summer holidays and normal office routines resume simultaneously.
Parents are advised to leave home earlier during the first week, follow designated school drop-off areas and avoid stopping in locations that block surrounding traffic.
Other motorists should also expect longer journey times around major school districts.
## **Dubai Police Steps Up School Safety**
Dubai Police has increased preparations around schools for the new academic year.
More than **140 security guards across 35 schools** received training covering traffic safety, student drop-off procedures and emergency response ahead of reopening.
Dubai Police is also deploying **253 patrols and 28 drones** around school areas as part of its back-to-school safety preparations.
The measures are intended to protect students while helping manage the significant increase in traffic around schools.
## **Sharjah Also Strengthens Traffic Measures**
Sharjah Police has introduced an integrated traffic and community-awareness plan for the start of the 2026–27 academic year.
Patrols have been increased around schools, while inspections of school buses have also been intensified as students return.
Drivers across the UAE should reduce speed around school zones, watch for children crossing roads and follow instructions from police officers and school traffic teams.
## **Flexible Working Hours Help Government Employees**
Eligible UAE federal government employees can benefit from flexible working arrangements during the first day of school.
Parents may receive up to **three hours of flexibility** for school drop-offs and pick-ups, helping families manage the transition back to normal routines.
Parents should check their employer’s applicable rules and internal procedures before using the allowance.
## **First-Day Scenes Across the Emirates**
Schools have been making the return more welcoming, particularly for younger pupils attending for the first time.
Campuses across the country have used balloons, music, activities, mascots, photo areas and other welcome-back experiences to help students settle in.
For younger children, teachers are also focusing on play, music, colouring and social activities during the first days to make the transition from the summer break easier.
