WhatsApp Lets You Delete a Message on Web but Not on Your Phone? Here’s Why and How to Fix It

By Thasmiya
You long-press a message on WhatsApp on your phone, hit delete, and only **“Delete for me”** appears. But when you open the exact same conversation on WhatsApp Web or Desktop, suddenly **“Delete for everyone”** is available.
It can look like a strange WhatsApp glitch, but the difference is often connected to the way WhatsApp synchronises messages across linked devices. Differences in app versions, connectivity, device time and sync status can cause the available options to temporarily differ between your phone and computer.
## **Why WhatsApp Web and your phone can show different options**
WhatsApp supports a multi-device system, meaning linked devices can access your account without your phone having to remain constantly connected.
When a device is linked, WhatsApp transfers an end-to-end encrypted copy of recent message history to it. That history is stored locally on the linked device, and synchronisation continues between your devices.
This means your phone and computer can occasionally be at slightly different sync states.
If your mobile app is outdated, the connection is unstable, your phone’s clock is incorrect or one device has not fully synchronised, one device may temporarily show an option that the other does not.
## **First, check when you sent the message**
Before troubleshooting your phone, check the age of the message.
WhatsApp officially gives users a limited period after sending a message to request **Delete for everyone**. WhatsApp’s current Help Center describes this as two days after sending.
If the permitted deletion window has already passed, you should not expect Delete for everyone to remain available.
If the message is recent and WhatsApp Web still offers the option while your phone does not, a device-sync issue is a more likely explanation.
## **What to do if WhatsApp Web still shows “Delete for everyone”**
The simplest solution may be to use the device where the option is available.
Open the conversation on WhatsApp Web or the desktop application, select your message and choose **Delete → Delete for everyone**.
WhatsApp says that when you delete a message for everyone, the deletion synchronises across online devices where you are logged into the same WhatsApp account.
So you do not necessarily need to make the option appear on your phone first.
## **Fix 1: Update WhatsApp on your phone**
An outdated application can contribute to feature differences between devices.
Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and check whether a WhatsApp update is available.
WhatsApp specifically states that both the sender and recipients should be using the latest version for Delete for everyone to work correctly.
After updating, reopen the conversation and check the message again.
## **Fix 2: Check your phone’s date and time**
Your phone’s clock can also be worth checking because message deletion is time-sensitive.
Set the device to use its **automatic date, time and time zone** rather than manually configured settings.
This may be particularly relevant if you recently travelled between countries or changed your device’s clock.
Then restart WhatsApp and check whether the option appears.
## **Fix 3: Make sure both devices are properly connected**
A weak or interrupted internet connection can cause WhatsApp Web and your mobile application to temporarily display different information.
Connect your phone to reliable Wi-Fi or mobile data, open WhatsApp and allow it a moment to synchronise.
WhatsApp identifies poor internet connectivity as one of the most common causes of problems sending and receiving chats and recommends refreshing WhatsApp Web when connection problems occur.
## **Fix 4: Refresh WhatsApp Web**
If the problem appears to be on the computer instead, refresh the browser tab.
WhatsApp also recommends clearing browser cache and cookies, logging out and signing back in, restarting the device or trying another network when WhatsApp Web has connection problems.
## **Fix 5: Relink your computer**
If your phone and computer continue behaving differently, you can reconnect the linked device.
On your primary phone, open **WhatsApp → Settings/More Options → Linked Devices**.
Select the affected computer and log it out.
Then open WhatsApp Web or Desktop again and link the computer using the QR code.
WhatsApp officially allows users to disconnect Web, Desktop, companion phones and tablets through the Linked Devices section of the primary phone.
## **Make sure it is actually your message**
Delete for everyone normally applies to messages **you sent**.
You cannot generally delete another person’s message from everyone’s conversation.
There is an exception for WhatsApp group admins. Admins can remove messages sent by other members from the group, and WhatsApp will show that the message was deleted by an admin.
## **What happens after you choose “Delete for everyone”?**
The original message is replaced with a notice indicating that the message was deleted.
However, deleting it does not guarantee that nobody saw it.
A recipient may already have read the message before you removed it, and WhatsApp says you will not necessarily be notified if deletion for everyone was unsuccessful.
## **Photos and videos may be different**
There is another important limitation for media.
WhatsApp warns that recipients using iOS may still have media you sent saved in their Photos library even after the corresponding WhatsApp message has been deleted.
So deleting an accidentally shared photo from a conversation does not guarantee that every locally saved copy has disappeared.
## **“Delete for me” is not the same thing**
Be careful when selecting the deletion option.
**Delete for me** removes the message only from your own chat. The recipient can still see their copy.
**Delete for everyone** requests removal of the message from everyone’s conversation.
If you accidentally choose Delete for me, WhatsApp currently provides a short **five-second Undo window**.
## **Quick fix**
If WhatsApp Web gives you **Delete for everyone** but your phone does not, try this order:
1. Check that the message is still within WhatsApp’s deletion window. 2. If Web offers Delete for everyone, use it there. 3. Update WhatsApp on your phone. 4. Turn on automatic date and time. 5. Make sure your phone has a stable internet connection. 6. Refresh WhatsApp Web. 7. If the mismatch continues, log out and relink the affected device.
## **Why this matters**
WhatsApp is increasingly a multi-device service, so your phone, browser and desktop app do not always behave identically at every moment.
A missing Delete for everyone button on one device therefore does not automatically mean the message can no longer be removed.
If another linked device still legitimately offers the option, use it immediately rather than waiting for your phone to catch up. Then update and synchronise your devices to reduce the chance of the problem happening again.
