When Are Salik Gates Free in Dubai? Toll Timings and Charges Explained

By Thasmiya
[Dubai’s Salik toll system](https://www.whatmatters.ae/post/salik-expands-beyond-toll-gates-new-five-year) no longer charges the same amount throughout the day. Under the variable pricing system, motorists pay **AED 6 during weekday peak hours, AED 4 during off-peak periods and AED 0 during designated late-night hours**.
So, when exactly can you cross a Salik gate for free? Here’s the current Dubai Salik schedule. Motorists should also know how to [check whether an unexpected Salik payment SMS is genuine and report potential scams](https://www.whatmatters.ae/post/fake-fine-salik-sms-scams-uae-check-fine).
## **When are Salik gates completely free?**
For most of the year, **all Salik toll gates are free from 1am to 6am every day**.
That means motorists passing through a Salik gate during this five-hour window will not have a toll charge deducted from their account.
During Ramadan, however, the free period changes to **2am until 7am**.
## **Salik charges from Monday to Saturday**
From Monday through Saturday, the standard schedule outside Ramadan is:
**6am to 10am — AED 6** This is the morning peak period.
**10am to 4pm — AED 4** This is considered an off-peak period.
**4pm to 8pm — AED 6** The evening rush-hour rate applies.
**8pm to 1am — AED 4** The toll returns to the off-peak rate.
**1am to 6am — FREE** No Salik toll is charged during this period.
## **Are Salik gates free on Sundays?**
Not for the whole day.
This is an important point because some motorists still assume that Salik is completely free on Sundays.
Under the variable pricing system, the regular Sunday toll is **AED 4 throughout the chargeable periods**, regardless of whether you cross during what would normally be a weekday peak or off-peak time.
The only standard free period is **1am to 6am**.
The standard Sunday rate applies except where different arrangements apply for public holidays or major events.
## **Sunday Salik timings**
For a normal Sunday outside Ramadan:
**6am to 1am — AED 4**
**1am to 6am — FREE**
So if you are planning a Sunday drive specifically to avoid Salik charges, you will still need to travel during the late-night free window.
## **What happens during Ramadan?**
Salik uses different timings during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
From Monday to Saturday, the Ramadan schedule is:
**7am to 9am — AED 4**
**9am to 5pm — AED 6**
**5pm to 2am — AED 4**
**2am to 7am — FREE**
On Sundays during Ramadan, the toll remains **AED 4 during chargeable hours**, while the **2am to 7am period is free**.
## **Why does Dubai have variable Salik pricing?**
Dubai introduced variable Salik pricing on **January 31, 2025**.
Instead of charging one flat toll at all times, the system makes it more expensive to cross during the busiest weekday periods and cheaper—or completely free—when traffic demand is lower.
Salik says the system was introduced in coordination with RTA to improve transport efficiency and redistribute journeys away from the busiest periods.
## **How much can changing your travel time save?**
Timing your journey can make a noticeable difference if your regular commute crosses several toll gates.
For example, crossing two Salik gates during weekday peak hours costs **AED 12** in toll charges for that journey.
Cross the same two gates during an AED 4 off-peak period and the cost falls to **AED 8**.
Travel during the free 1am-to-6am period and the toll cost is **AED 0**.
For someone making frequent journeys, avoiding peak periods where practical can add up to meaningful savings over a month.
## **Does the free period apply to every Salik gate?**
Yes. The time-based variable tariff applies across Dubai’s Salik toll-gate network.
Salik currently operates **10 toll gates** in Dubai, including the two newer gates that began operating in November 2024.
The free late-night window is therefore not limited to a particular road or gate.
## **What about Al Maktoum Bridge?**
Drivers should be careful not to confuse older gate-specific rules with the current variable-pricing system.
For current journeys, motorists should follow Salik’s published variable tariff schedule rather than relying on old information about specific gates or historical free periods.
The easiest rule to remember outside Ramadan is: **1am to 6am = AED 0 across Salik.**
## **Are Salik gates free on public holidays?**
Do not automatically assume so.
Salik’s published tariff specifically describes the standard AED 4 Sunday pricing as applying to Sundays **except public holidays and events**. That means special arrangements can differ when a public holiday or major event occurs.
Motorists travelling on a public holiday should therefore check the latest announcement from Salik or Dubai’s RTA rather than assuming the Sunday rate or a full-day exemption applies.
## **Quick Salik timing guide**
For most of the year:
**Monday to Saturday** 6am–10am: AED 6 10am–4pm: AED 4 4pm–8pm: AED 6 8pm–1am: AED 4 1am–6am: **FREE**
**Sunday**6am–1am: AED 4 1am–6am: **FREE**
**Ramadan** 7am–9am: AED 4 9am–5pm: AED 6 5pm–2am: AED 4 2am–7am: **FREE**
Sunday Ramadan chargeable periods are AED 4.
## **How to check your Salik account**
Motorists can use the official Salik website or [Salik mobile app](https://www.whatmatters.ae/post/dubainow-app-lets-residents-pay-traffic-parking-and-salik-fines-in-one-place) to check their balance, transactions and toll charges.
Keeping enough balance in the account is important even if you frequently travel during free periods, since crossing at another time can trigger a charge automatically.
## **Why this matters**
Knowing Dubai’s Salik timings can make everyday driving more affordable.
The biggest thing to remember is that Salik is **not free all day on Sundays**. Outside Ramadan, the universal free window is **1am to 6am**, while weekday peak journeys cost AED 6 and off-peak journeys cost AED 4.
If your schedule is flexible, simply shifting a journey away from peak hours can reduce your toll bill—and travelling during the overnight free period can remove the Salik charge entirely.
